Production Company Young One Studio Uses Blackmagic Design Workflow

Updated: Sep 14, 2023

Fremont, CA – September 07, 2022 – Blackmagic Design today announced that film, music video and commercial production company Young One Studio shoots with Blackmagic Design cameras and manages its post production workflow with DaVinci Resolve Studio editing, grading, visual effects (VFX) and audio post production software.

Founded in 2015 in Melbourne, Australia as a demo reel company, partners Maty Young and Tamiah Bantum moved to Los Angeles in 2018 to expand their work into commercials and music videos. Young, a traditionally trained actor and musician, fills both director and cinematographer roles while partner Bantum, who also acts and is an experienced motion capture performer, produces and directs for the company.

Early on, the idea of purchasing a cinema camera for their work simply wasn’t possible due to price but discovering fellow Australian company Blackmagic Design and its offerings was a game changer. “I simply never looked at purchasing a cinema camera before as the return just wasn’t there,” said Young. “Then Blackmagic Design came along. The camera image that was coming out of these sensors at the price point was unbeatable.”

Bantum added, “We wanted to be able to own reliable bodies that were cost effective and that produced stunning visuals, and the Blackmagic cameras checked all the boxes for us.”

Young One Studio has been producing content with Blackmagic Design cameras since its beginning, originally purchasing a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K digital film camera for its ability to record in Blackmagic RAW. The duo continued to upgrade with the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K, the Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro and both the Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro 4.6K G2 and URSA Mini Pro 12K digital film cameras. “A big thing for me owning my own cinema cameras is that I want to be able to build and rig them exactly how I want and keep them rigged,” added Young. “I want to know how they’re going to behave inside and out and trust the image that they can create from pre production to principal photography, all the way through to post. Having one consolidated and affordable camera brand that’s consistent across all our shoots gives us a huge amount of confidence and flexibility.”

Multiple camera systems mean the most flexibility in production. “Currently we utilize the Pocket 6K Pro and URSA Mini Pro 12K the most,” said Bantum. “The URSA Mini Pro 12K produces a stunning image and is extremely reliable as an A camera. The Pocket 6K Pro complements it very well when we need to throw something light on a gimbal, use it as a stunt cam, or grab B roll. The Pocket 6K Pro is also handy for guerilla style shooting as it can be rigged handheld and is great to run around with on location.”

Beyond production, the company has embraced DaVinci Resolve Studio since version 15 after realizing its strength at color grading. Bantum also hoped that it would provide a single solution for post production noting, “It was an excellent way to streamline our process, rather than having to rely on other editing software in the hopes they’d work together.”

Young added, “We were never big fans of round tripping media. Like all things with our business, we like concise and clear setups which is exactly what Resolve gives us.”

“As we do almost all post production ourselves, from editing and coloring to mixing and mastering, Resolve having absolutely everything all in one place is just perfect,” continued Young. “Every other piece of editing software feels as if it has a convoluted mess of a menu system and layout. DaVinci Resolve is so clear and easy to understand it just feels much newer, sleeker and better designed.”
